Acrysof® ReStor® Multifocal IOL
The Acrysof® ReSTOR® Multifocal lens has a patented apodized diffractive optic design and performs like a bifocal lens inside the eye. Also, since ReStor® doesn’t utilize movement of the lens in the eye, it isn’t dependent on any muscle movement or mechanical process to provide clear vision.
The ReSTOR® lens consistently shows improved vision at range, from close-up, as well as from intermediate distances, and is similar to two lenses in one. The first is a refractive lens for distance, and the other being an apodized diffractive lens for near vision. This allows ReSTOR® to show more consistent results and create more satisfied patients, all without the need for reading glasses, contact lenses, bifocals, or progressive lenses.
For long-distance vision:
The ReSTOR® lens creates a clear image of the far away object, and at the same time creates a second, highly defocused image for near vision (typically not perceived).
For near vision:
The ReSTOR® lens creates a sharply focused near image and at the same time creates a second, highly defocused far away image (typically not perceived).
Also to note, anyone who is dependent on reading glasses or bifocals may be a candidate for the ReSTOR® lens. While ReSTOR® lenses were a breakthrough technology initially approved for cataract patients, the need for cataract surgery is not necessarily a requirement to qualify for ReSTOR® lenses.
ReStor Multifocal IOL: Clinical Study Results
Results from a controlled clinical study of the FDA-approved AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL showed maximum visual performance when the ReSTOR® lens is implanted in both eyes, although benefits are also seen when the lens is used in only one eye.
Clinical data shows significantly reduced dependence on glasses:
- 99% of patients could see well enough to drive a car without glasses or contacts.
- 97% of patients could read the newspaper without reading glasses or bifocals.
- 90% of patients could shave or put on makeup without glasses or contacts.
- 80% of patients NEVER wear glasses for any activities.
ReStor Multifocal IOL: What to Expect
As the clinical data above shows, the ReSTOR lens provides most people clear distance and reading vision, along with functional intermediate vision. Some people may be more comfortable with supplemental correction, particularly at night or for long periods of computer work, but most people will be far less dependent on glasses or contacts to function normally.
