Crystalens Accommodating Multifocal IOL
The Crystalens Multifocal IOL was first approved by the FDA in November 2003, and is the first and only accommodating intraocular lens implant that focuses like the eye’s natural lens. It provides excellent adjustable focus for continuous vision far and near, and also provides optimal night vision that surpasses other multifocal lens implants.
The Crystalens is designed to mimic the flexibility of the natural lens by including a hinge that flexes forward and backward based on the eye’s natural muscle movements. The lens rests back in the eye for distance vision, flexes forward for intermediate vision, and flexes further forward into the front of the eye for near vision.
Crystalens enables the eye to focus continuously and seamlessly through a range of distances, and no other lens implant comes closer to mirroring the natural lens mechanics of the eye.
Crystalens IOL: Features & Benefits
Range of Vision: Crystalens moves and changes shape using the eye’s natural focusing mechanism to focus on objects across a broad range of distances. This accommodation provides significant advantages in addressing intermediate vision.
Clarity of Vision: Unlike multifocal lenses which split light into multiple focal points, Crystalens directs all available light received into a single focal point just as a healthy natural lens would.
No Adapting Required: Because Crystalens produces a single image consistent with normal vision, there is no need for patients to neuro-adapt to receiving multiple images.
Better Night Vision: There is no need for patients to tolerate or adjust to halos, starbursts or glare sometimes associated with multifocal IOLs.
Crystalens IOL: What to Expect
The Crystalens excels in providing clarity without glasses for far and mid-range vision. That said, we do advise patients that they may at times prefer low-level, over-the-counter reading glasses (+1.25 or +1.50) to read small print comfortably. Essentially, you can expect the Crystalens to provide the vision of someone in their mid-40’s.
