TECNIS® Multifocal IOL
The TECNIS® Multifocal IOL is similar to the ReStor® lens as it performs like a bifocal lens inside the eye. Similarly, the TECNIS® Multifocal has also been shown to provide good near, intermediate and distance vision, and performs like 2 lenses on one. The first being a refractive lens for distance, and the other a lens for near vision.
For long-distance vision:
The Tecnis Multifocal lens creates a clear image of the far away object, and at the same time creates a second, highly defocused image for near vision (typically not perceived).
For near vision:
The Tecnis Multifocal lens creates a sharply focused near image and at the same time creates a second, highly defocused far away image (typically not perceived).
Also to note, anyone dependent on reading glasses or bifocals can be a candidate for the TECNIS® Multifocal lens. While TECNIS® lenses were a breakthrough technology initially approved for cataract surgery patients, it is not necessarily a requirement to qualify for the TECNIS® lens.
TECNIS® Multifocal IOL: Clinical Study Results
Controlled clinical study Results for the FDA-approved TECNIS® Multifocal IOL showed the best visual performance when the TECNIS® lens was implanted in both eyes, although the lens also performed well when used in only one eye.
In Clinical Studies:
- Over 94% of patients stated they would choose the Tecnis multifocal lens again
- Nearly 90% of patients are free from glasses after receiving the TECNIS® lens
TECNIS® Multifocal IOL: What to Expect
The TECNIS® lens normally provides clear distance and reading vision, to go along with functional mid-range vision. Everyone’s vision is different, so some people do end up feeling more comfortable with some type of supplemental correction, particularly for long periods of computer work or at night. But, essentially 9 out of 10 of people who have had the Tecnis multifocal lens implanted in both eyes no longer need glasses for any activity.
