Eye spasm or twitching (blepharospasm) is an uncontrollable, repetitive blinking of the eyelid. In most cases, patients experience an involuntary movement of the upper eyelid of both eyes, which reoccurs every few seconds for 1-2 minutes at a time. These eyelid spasms can lead to vision problems, and can make it difficult for some to carry out normal daily activities like driving, or simply walking across the street.
It is important to distinguish blepharospasm from orbicularis myokymia. Most people will actually develop a minor eyelid twitch at some point in their lives, and while the cause is generally unknown, it is often associated with fatigue, stress and/or caffeine. That minor eyelid twitch is what’s know as orbicularis myokymia.
The most common treatment for eyelid spasms is BOTOX®, which works to relax the associated muscles around the eye. In cases where the injections are ineffective, surgery is often the next option to relieve the spasms.
