Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Overview

Laser skin resurfacing is also know as a laser peel, laser vaporization and lasabrasion. Recent technological breakthroughs also now support much more precise alterations of damaged and/or wrinkled skin than has historically been the case.

Today, the surgery is not only customized for each patient, but also for each area of the face. This provides a new level of control in laser surfacing, providing extreme precision to more effectively reduce facial scars, wrinkles and blemishes.

Laser skin resurfacing can help improve the following:

  • Fine lines or wrinkles
  • Aged or sun-damaged skin
  • Scars from acne or chickenpox
  • Birthmarks such as linear epidermal nevi
  • Some pre-cancerous skin conditions
  • Liver spots, age spots and superficial pigmentation
  • Yellowish or grayish skin tones
  • Enlarged oil glands on the nose
  • Non-responsive skin after a facelift
  • Warts

How it Works

The laser used in laser resurfacing is used to send short, concentrated pulses of light at the targeted area to remove unwanted, damaged skin in a very precise manner…one layer at a time

.

The laser beam removes the outer layer of skin (epidermis) as it simultaneously heats the underlying skin (dermis). This works to stimulate growth of new collagen fibers, meaning the new skin that forms while the treatment area heals ends up being smoother, firmer and healthier.

The Procedure

Laser Skin Resurfacing is performed in a specially equipped laser room and does not require a surgery center. The time needed to preform the procedure will depend on the size of the area being treated. Discomfort will also vary from patient to patient.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Day:
Patient and doctor will discuss the best method of anesthesia for each case. Then, once ready, the laser energy will be applied to the treatment area in short, quick bursts.

The old skin will be vaporized with the first pass of the laser beam, and subsequent passes will cause the collagen in the underlying layers to tighten.

Following Laser Skin Resurfacing:
Skin will be very red and sensitive immediately following the treatment. The degree of redness and sensitivity will very much depend on the age and health of the treated skin.

Patients will need someone to drive them home after the procedure, and rest is usually recommended for the remainder of the day.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery:
Avoid direct sun exposure for a minimum of 2 weeks following the procedure. It is also recommended to avoid liquid or pressed powder foundations for at least 7 days.

The redness will gradually fade to pink and ultimately resolve. This redness or pink color can normally be camouflaged using make-up after 7-10 days.
