Eyelid Reconstruction

Eyelid Reconstruction can be an option when there is a defect in the eyelid. These defects can be caused by a variety of things, but most commonly occur as a result of a trauma or removal of a tumor.

Minor trauma or removal of small growths  can sometimes cause simple superficial defects in the eyelid. Most of the time, these situations require only local wound care and will heal on their own within 1-2 weeks. Other times, these simple superficial defects can require a few sutures along with the local wound care.

Traumatic injuries or removal of larger growths or skin cancers can cause larger defects that extend through the entire eyelid. In some of these cases the defects can be sutured together directly, but in other cases they may require a more complex eyelid reconstruction.

When a more complex eyelid reconstruction is required, there is often a need to transfer adjacent tissues (flaps), or transfer skin from other parts of the eyelid, face or body (skin grafts) to successfully complete the reconstruction. In some of these more severe cases, a staged lid reconstruction (more than one operation) may even be required.

The end goal of eyelid reconstruction is simply to return the eyelid to it’s normal state, so it can facilitate it’s primary role of protecting the eyeball, draining tears, and preserving overall visual function.
