BOTOX® Injections

BOTOX® is a prescription-only medication containing small amounts of a highly-purified and refined protein. It was first approved by the FDA in 1989 for the treatment of eyelid spasms (blepharospasm) and eyes pointing in different directions (strabismus). This made BOTOX® the first product of it’s kind to be FDA approved.

When injected into specific muscles at doses approved by the FDA, BOTOX® is expected to last between 3 to 10 months depending on both the type of application and the individual patient. Overall, BOTOX has shown to have a very high level of safety when used in these extremely small doses.

How it Works

BOTOX Injections block muscular nerve signals, which weakens and inactivates muscles so they can’t contract. As the muscles weaken, the overlying skin relaxes and wrinkles caused by the muscle contractions soften and often disappear.

The end result is diminished unwanted facial wrinkles in the upper third of the face, including frown lines between the eyes, crow’s feet around the eyes, and forehead lines.

What to Expect

BOTOX injection treatment isn’t a surgical procedure, so it doesn’t require a surgery center and can be preformed in the office. The entire procedure only takes a few seconds as extremely small dose of BOTOX® are injected directly into designated facial muscles using a micro-needle.

The effects of the initial injections won’t normally be seen for 3 or 4 days, and results will continue to improve for up to 2 weeks. But, because this is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure, patients are able to return to normal activities immediately.

Possible Side Effects

Some patients feel an initial stinging sensation which quickly subsides. Using a cold compresses or over-the-counter pain medication is recommended when any discomfort is experienced following the procedure.

In certain cases, there is a small amount of bruising to the area in which the injections were applied. One or two patients out of a hundred may also experience a temporary drooping of the eyelid, but this normally subsides within 1 to 2 weeks.

Since Botox proteins only attract to muscles, there are no negative effects on the central nervous system. It does not cause numbness in the area of the injections, and issues related to other facial muscles and expressions are rare.

Alternatives

Cosmetic surgery and chemical peels have historically been the primary means of reducing undesirable wrinkles caused by the aging process. To learn about other cosmetic procedures and options, please visit our oculoplastic procedures page.
