Open-Angle Glaucoma

Approximately 90% of Glaucoma patients have Open-angle Glaucoma, making it by far the most common form. And while it cannot be cured, it can often be controlled and vision loss minimized with early detection and treatment.

How it Works

The clear fluid that circulates inside the eye to provide the eye its nourishment must be continually cycled through the blood stream via the eye’s drainage canal (trabecular meshwork).

With open-angle glaucoma, something goes wrong with the drainage canal so fluid can no longer drain fast enough. This results in fluid pressure buildup inside the eye pushing against the optic nerve which connects the eye to the brain. If this pressure is left untreated over time, irreversible vision loss can occur.

Treatment Overview

It is normally possible to manage open-angle glaucoma with eye drops. This leaves laser treatment and/or filtration surgery only for cases where the condition either isn’t responding to drops or has reached an advanced stage. The popularity of treatment using pills continues to decline due to side effects, but is still an option in some cases.
